Hararu Falls is the last drop of the Waitangi River before it enters the Bay of Islands and Pacific Ocean. Follow signage to a convenient parking lot off of Hararu Falls Road. The falls are a very short walk from there.

It holds importance to native Maori and visitors can take a boat ride in a traditional waka (although the one in the photo had an outboard engine) or a 5 km walking trail to/from Waitangi, which is the location where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. The treaty, between Maori and British peoples, formed the nation of New Zealand.

At just 5 metres high, the impressiveness of this waterfall is not the height but the width. The height is affected by the tide which enters the Bay of Islands right up to the base of the falls. After several weeks of dry conditions it was running very low when these photos were taken. A local gentleman at the falls informed me that during a major flood, the river had so much water flowing through that the 5 m drop didn't exist at high tide.
