The PROW OF THE OLD BATTLESHIP TENNESSEE is a reproduction of the figurehead on the U.S.S Tennessee, of Spanish-American War days, loaned by the Secretary of the Navy,at the request of Capt. Albert Gleaves, 1910. -
Tennessee: A Guide to the State, Nashville section, pg. 196.
According to the book Hidden History of Nashville, the concrete ship prow was originally placed right near the park's main entrance located off Elliston Place. The ornate metal figurehead was the original cast used to make the one on the United State cruiser Tennessee. The cast was exhibited at the Seattle Exposition in 1909 which was actually called the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. After the Exposition Admiral Albert Gleaves (then a captain) suggested that it be sent to his home town Nashville. Then the concrete prow was constructed to display it on. The prow is now away from the entrance to the park and somewhat hidden in the trees.
