Caroline Crale was hanged for the murder of her philandering artist husband, Amyas Crale. Fourteen years later her daughter, Lucy Crale approaches Poirot to prove her mother’s innocence or otherwise.

There were five people involved with the murder of Amyas Crale, apart from Caroline Crale. Caroline’s, sister Angela, the children’s governess Miss Williams, Amyas’ best friend Philip Blake and his brother Meredith, and lastly Elsa Greer who was Amyas’ muse. Poirot interviews all of them and comes to the conclusion that Caroline was innocent, but went to the gallows trying to protect her daughter.

Amyas was poisoned by a poison stolen from Meredith Blake. Caroline had stolen the poison and kept it in her bedroom drawer. On the day of the murder Caroline had found her daughter fetching a bottle of beer for her father. Caroline gave the beer to Amyas, after which he died. Caroline assumed that her daughter had poisoned the beer and went about removing fingerprints from the bottle and glass. What Caroline did not know was that Elsa Creer had stolen the poison and given it to Amyas some time earlier. The poison was slow acting and only killed Amyas as a coincidence when Caroline gave him the beer.

Poirot deduces the truth and confronts Elsa Creer in front of the other four witnesses. Elsa denies it, but privately agrees with Poirot later. Elsa explains that she now has to live with two deaths on her conscience.

The Crale house on the film is actually Benington Lordship.
