History
The Powder Magazine, Church Street, Stawell, appears to have been built in the 1870s for Thomas Brown, ironmonger and timber merchant. The first advertisement in the Stawell newspaper referring to explosives for sale at Brown's store appeared on 8 November 1875, reporting that 'all kinds of blasting powder' were available. According to the Stawell Historical Society, several ironmongers had their own powder magazines for short term storage of blasting powder which had been procured from the Government Powder Magazine to
fulfil orders from local mining companies.
The Gunpowder Act of 1858 regulated that the importation, carriage and custody of gunpowder be stored within Public Magazines or through the licensing of private magazines. The Gunpowder Act was extended to
Stawell in 1861, prior to the construction of this magazine.
This is the only example still existing in the town of Stawell.
