Buncom is located at the confluence of Sterling Creek and the Little Applegate River in rural Jackson County. The area was settled by Chinese miners in 1851 when gold was discovered in Sterling Creek and in the area that became Jacksonville. By 1861, the site contained a general store and a saloon. The Buncom Mining District was established in 1867 and in 1896, the Buncom post office was created. The gold in the area was depleted by 1918, leading to the closure of the post office and abandonment of the town. Today, three structures remain from the early 1900s: the post office (built in 1910) a cookhouse and a bunkhouse.
Reason for Abandonment: Economic

Date Abandoned: 01/01/1918
