Samuel Smiles was born in Haddington, East Lothian on 23 December, 1812, and died in Kensington in 1904 at the age of 91. He lived and worked for some 20 years in Leeds and was editor of the Leeds Times, a railway secretary, reformer, and author.

The Blue Plaque is fixed to the extreme left-hand end pillar of the building which started life as 'The Leeds Institute' and is now the 'Leeds City Museum'. Below the Leeds Civic Trust logo is the wording:-

                'Self-Help', 'Character', 'Thrift'
                   and 'Duty', inspired by his
                  lectures to Leeds working men
                   in 1845. He worked in Leeds
                     1838-58 as a newspaper

                        railway secretary.
