From the Blue Skyways web site of the State Library of Kansas:
The friendly town of Stafford is located in Stafford County only a few miles east of St. John, the county seat. Broadway Street is "old" US-50 and connects the two. A newer highway running along the south edge of town now gets the through traffic. The area is flat and sandy with some dune-like sandhills.
The AT&SF railroad runs east/west across Stafford County passing through town. The Union Pacific also has track here, once part of the Missouri-Pacific, but it is abandoned.
The town and the county were named for Captain Lewis Stafford, Co. E, 1st Kansas, who was killed at the battle of Young's Point in Louisiana.
Stafford is "The Gateway" to the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, 6 miles north and 6 miles east of Stafford. The refuge is a birdwatcher's paradise.
