The NGS Horton series is located at the summit of Horton Rim in Klamath County, OR.

After an extensive hike up to the summit of Horton Rim I was able to recover U.S. Geological Survey Horton Station Mark and U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Reference Mark 1 and 2. The station mark was noticeably damaged with scratches and dents from someone pounding on it with a rock. The Azimuth Mark was searched for but not found. From looking at the age and type of the unstamped station mark, my hunch is that this station was probably monumented in the early 1900s and the reference marks were monumented much later, in 1933 and finally, the AZ mark being monumented in 1948.

Access to these benchmarks goes through private property which surrounds much of the base of Horton Rim so travel at your own risk, if you choose not to ask permission from any of the landowners who live all around the the Rim.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1953 (CTH) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED. AN AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1948 BUT WAS NOT OBSERVED UPON UNTIL 1953. THE STATION MARK IS SET IN A LOOSE BOULDER AND COULD EASILY BE MOVED. A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 12 MILES EAST OF KLAMATH FALLS, 4 MILES EAST OF OLENE AND 3 MILES SOUTHEAST OF DAIRY ON THE NORTHWEST END AND HIGHEST POINT OF A TIMBERED RIDGE THAT IS AT THE NORTHEAST END OF THE POE VALLEY. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE STORE IN OLENE, GO NORTHEASTERLY ON STATE HIGHWAY 66 FOR 2.5 MILES TO AN OILED ROAD TO THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT, GO 3.85 MILES TO A CURVE AND A LANE ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT, GO ABOUT 100 YARDS TO A ROAD LEFT JUST NORTH OF A HOUSE. TURN LEFT, FOLLOW ROAD 0.35 MILE TO END OF ROAD AND END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE WALK UP TRAIL TO TOP OF RIDGE AND END OF TRAIL. BEAR RIGHT, WALK TOWARD SADDLE AND AGAIN PICK UP TRAIL. FOLLOW TRAIL THROUGH SADDLE TO ITS NORTHERN END AND THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE RIGHT. FROM HERE WALK WESTERLY 0.25 MILE TO THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE RIDGE AND STATION. A 1-1/2 HOUR PACK. THE STATION MARK IS A U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BENCH MARK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER THAT PROJECTS 18 INCHES. THE MARK IS UNSTAMPED. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS STAMPED HORTON NO 1 1933. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A LARGE BOULDER THAT IS ABOUT 2.5 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION MARK. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS STAMPED HORTON NO 2 1933. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER THAT PROJECTS 2 FEET AND IS 3 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION MARK. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS STAMPED HORTON 1933. IT IS A STANDARD DISK CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER THAT PROJECTS 2 FEET. IT IS 125 YARDS EAST OF THE LOWEST POINT OF A SADDLE, 50 YARDS SOUTH OF THE NORTH END OF THE SADDLE AND 2 FEET NORTHWEST OF A POLE SURROUNDED BY A CAIRN.
