There are four Western Development Museums in Saskatchewan, each with a different theme. The theme of the North Battleford WDM is that of a Heritage Farm & Village.

This "Armstrong" Handcar is part of the railway exhibits at the Western Development Museum. It was once used by the CNR in the Blackfoot subdivision, which lies to the west of North Battleford.
Made of wood with steel running gear and a foot operated brake, this is an old one, for sure. This type/vintage was used from the 1880s to the 1920s.
This handcar, aka section car, would have been manufactured by the Kalamazoo Manufacturing Company of Kalamazoo, MI.

"The company famous for its railroad handcars was originally founded in 1883, as the Kalamazoo Railroad Velocipede and Car Company. In 1901, the company would change its name it to the Kalamazoo Railway Supply Company. The name remained until the early 1950s, when it was finally renamed the Kalamazoo Manufacturing Company, due to the growth in the company's non-railroad related business."
For the gearheads amongst us, the museum has an extensive collection of agricultural implements, tractors, both steam and gasoline, and carriages, cars and trucks. It's pretty easy to spend a whole day wandering around this museum, and well worth the time. Check them out here: (
