The Clapp Memorial Library was built in 1883-1887. It was named in memory of John Francis Clapp, who had donated 40,000 for the ererction of a free public library. Henry Kilburn was of New York was the architect. The building is in the form a a Latin Cross with a central octagonal tower. It is constructed of local brown stone and features a roof of red Italian tiles. Huge stained glass windows are on the northern and southern facades.
