The Malay state of Kelantan lies on the north east border with Thailand. The state capital, Kota Bharu, lies just south on the border, on the Kelantan River. A pleasant, not overly large, quiet town, with few visitors. On the south-west approach to the city is a park, with a number of sites, including a welcome sign.

This sign is in a tower design, with a symbolic copy of the Koran at its top most point. It lies at the end of a fountain, the other end of which has a clock tower. Skilfully constructed, the sign reads: "Welcome to Kota Bharu the Islamic City", in English, and presumably, the same in Arabic. Kota has the rep of being a devoutly Islamic city, as opposed to the decadent Kuala Lumpur.
