Salton City is on the edge of the Salton Sea which is California's largest lake and which is approx. 230 feet below sea level.

In 2000, the population was only 978 but it has nearly quadrupled by the 2010 census. The population explosion began as a result of the escalating California housing market. Improvements to Highway 86, cheap land & housing costs and a nearby casino made Salton City an attractive alternative location to live for some.
