On New Years Day 1926 Andrew Marsh publicly declares his will. He makes small bequests to Peter Baker and Robert Siddaway, and leaves the rest of his estate to a medical charity run by Dr Pritchard. There is no provision for his ward, Violet Wilson.

Many years later, when Violet is about to leave Cambridge University, Andrew Marsh takes part in a debate in the Union on the role of women in society. Poirot and Hastings meet Violet and proceed to the debate. After the debate Andrew Marsh asks his old friend Poirot to stay at his house. At the house Andrew Marsh says he is going to change his will and leave his estate to Violet. He asks Poirot to be executor. The phone rings and Andrew Marsh leaves the house. The next day he is found dead at a folly in the grounds.

Dr Pritchard automatically signs the death certificate for Andrew Marsh. At the reading of the will, Andrew Marsh’s lawyer, John Siddaway, is unable to find the will. Andrew Marsh will be declared intestate. Poirot vows to solve Andrew Marsh’s death and calls in Inspector Japp. When Japp goes to the folly he finds an insulin container belonging to Dr Pritchard. Poirot is perplexed. He had not found it, and therefore it must have planted after the murder. Japp knows of Dr Pritchard from the past and is happy to arrest Pritchard at Andrew Marsh’s funeral.

John Siddaway tells Poirot that he thinks that Andrew Marsh may have had a son, based on something Andrew Marsh had once said. Poirot soon rules out Robert Siddaway and Peter Baker. Violet’s tutor at Cambridge, Phyllida Campion, goes to John Siddaway and tells him that she intends to talk to Poirot over Andrew Marsh’s will. Whilst on her way to see Poirot she is pushed down an escalator on the underground. At the hospital a doctor lets slip that Phyllida Campion has had a child. Miss Lemon soon discovers that the child is Violet Wilson, and that Andrew Marsh was the father.

Having established that Violet will inherit, Poirot turns his attention to the murderer of Andrew Marsh. He deduces that John Siddaway’s wife, Sarah, is the culprit. She was a trained children’s nurse and wanted the inheritance for her son Robert. She had killed Andrew Marsh and stolen the will. She had also tried to kill Phyllida Campion.
