Woolwich overview

View pages in this section

Woolwich is the Royal Borough of Greenwich's main commercial and retail centre. It can trace its history back to pre-Roman times and it has been associated with the river and maritime trade for many centuries.

The town is undergoing a period of intensive regeneration with huge investment in new housing, transport, retail and leisure.

Major schemes such as the Royal Arsenal re-development project, Love Lane civic centre and retail scheme, Hare Street triangle and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension are complemented by a programme of conversions of empty office space to new and affordable residential units.
Transport

The town has excellent public transport links to central London via Charing Cross, London Bridge and Cannon Street.

It also has a DLR station with fast links to Stratford International and London City Airport, as well as Canning Town for the Jubilee Line on the London Underground.

Woolwich is also well connected to the national road network via the A205 (South Circular) and the A206 (Dartford M25 spine road).

Over 90 buses per hour link the town centre to south and south-east London, and new transport infrastructure currently under construction will further strengthen transport links.
Shopping and dining

The main shopping area features many national brands. There is also a market running six days a week in Beresford Square, in front of the Royal Arsenal gatehouse.

In the streets surrounding the main retail area you will find a rich mix of shops and cafes representing cultures from around the world. There are also traditional pubs and restaurants offering everything from pie and mash to Chinese buffets and noodle houses.
