In 1864, St. Peters AME Zion Church at 617 Queen Street was established as the first AME Zion congregation in the South. It began in 1865 for the Rue Chapel African American Methodist Episcopal congregation, one of the two oldest congregations in North Carolina.

Rue Chapel was relocated brick by brick to its current location in 1941. This brick sanctuary is the oldest African-American church still standing in New Bern.
