I'm not sure of the significance of the bear, but the turkey represents the annual National Turkey Calling Contest held here in Yellville.
This carving stands about 10' tall, and except for the turkey, appears to be carved from one log. Not being an expert on these things, I'm not sure how the turkey was affixed to the rest of the carving, but the piece as a whole looks marvelous! Definitely worth at least a drive-by if you're ever in town.
UPDATE*** I discovered that there was a small sign at one time explaining the carving, but it wasn't there the day I was there. However, it explains more about the carving, and reads as follows:

The Elm Tree died this year, so we decided to have something carved from it instead of just cutting it down. The decision was for a Shawnee Indian or a turkey and bear. Because the tree had too much decayed wood, there was not enough wood to carve the Indian, thus the bear or turkey.
This carving, was done with donations, at no cost to the taxpayers of Marion County. If you would like to donate, please contact Brad Hochwitt.
