John Ford Point, Monument Valley, Arizona - Philatelic Photographs on Waymarking.com

The first film shot in Monument Valley was the 1925 feature "The Vanishing American." It was based on the Zane Grey novel of the same name. Over the years, countless films have used Monument Valley as a backdrop.

Hollywood movie director John Ford (1894 - 1973) was particularly fond of this location, having chosen it for seven of his western movies. Two of these, "Stagecoach" and "The Searchers" have been directly or indirectly portrayed on U.S. postage stamps.

The postal card was one of a set of five issued in 1972 to promote tourism. The stamp does not show an actual scene but rather is a composite of images from Monument Valley. Among these are the "West Mitten" and the classic view from John Ford Point including several horses.
