Hebden Bridge is a Yorkshire town in the Pennine Hills. In the 1800s the towns in the Pennines were still quite isolated, certainly by modern standards and it made sense for local businesses to form cooperative societies. Indeed it is not far from the town of Rochdale where the movement first started.
After a small start in the town this large building was erected in 1876.
By the 1960s the society went out of business and nowadays the ground floor is occupied by a number of small shops.
