From the NRHP application (secondary link below), we learn that the significance of Prospect Hall is due to its grand architecture and ownership by several prominent families. In addition, it was site where Maj. Gen. Meade took over the Army of the Potomac in 1863 during the US Civil War.
From the 1950's until recently, the building has been used as a prep/Catholic school. Signs at the location indicated that the "Saint John's Catholic Prep School" has moved to a new facility.
