This plaque and site is on a path located within "Fort Canning Park" on a hill overlooking and a little to the north west of the centre of Singapore City. This Park was once the administrative centre of the island, now a popular tourist spot.
According the plaque the gardens have had a potted history. The idea first took root on or after 1822, the brainchild of one Nathaniel Wallich, but failed to germinate, closing in 1829 due to budgetary problems. Clearly, no stigmas was attached to this as in 1836 the gardens grew again, but again failed to flourish and expired in 1846. A third time in 1859 the gardens again took off, and, as far as I can gather, they form part of the growing things on Fort Canning Hill to this day.
My photos are just a tad blurry. My lens fogged over slightly due to local atmospheric conditions. Feel free to replace.
