This is an old-style Coca Cola vending machine. The bottled drinks would be lined up in horizontal slots inside the cooler. You deposited your money, opened the lid, selected a bottle, slid it to the vending station, then lifted it vertically through the dispensing gate that would pass only one bottle at a time. There was a bottle opener with a built-in but removable container that caught the tops as they were removed.

I bought many a bottle of soda, and not just Coke, from these machine in my youth many, many years ago.
