Windmill Point Lighthouse was constructed in the 1820's as a windmill. It served that purpose until 1838 when reformers seeking democratic reforms for Canada joined forces with sympathizers from New York to cross the Saint Lawrence and invade Prescott. The rebellion was able to gain control of the windmill. Eventually British troops and local militia retook the windmill. The building's use as a windmill was over. The site remained a military post.
In 1872 the buildings current story begins with the conversion of the building to a lighthouse. The 60 foot lighthouse was operated with a fifth order lens. It ceased operations in 1978. It is open seasonally for tours (daily between July and August - weekends in June and September). There are historical markers located on the site displaying additional history of the building and grounds.
