The Lang Mill was built in 1846 by Thomas Short. Very quickly the mill became one of the larger producers and exporters of flour and oatmeal in the central region of then Upper Canada.

However, by 1862 Short ran into financial difficulties and had to sell the mill. By the mid 1870's the mill had been renamed The Lang Mill in deference to the extended family who had settled and cultivated this region.

The mill remained in operation until 1965 when it was acquired by the Otonabee Conservation Authority.
