Miss Marple and Mr Stringer visit Mr Enderby, a rich recluse. Mr Enderby falls down the stairs, apparently having a heart attack. Miss Marple isn’t convinced, since Mr Enderby hated cats, and there is a cat now in the house. She also finds the print of a riding boot in a piece of mud. Inspector Craddock does not agree with Miss Marple’s theories, so Miss Marple goes it alone.

Miss Marple decides to eavesdrop on the reading of the will. There are four heirs sharing the fortune. Enderby’s sister, Cora, declares at the reading of the will that she believes Enderby was murdered . Miss Marple decides to talk to Cora, but finds her stabbed to death with a hatpin.

Knowing that the remaining heirs are staying at the Gallop Hotel & Riding School, Miss Marple books in. The Hotel is run by one of the heirs, Hector Enderby. Miss Marple soon finds the boot that made the print. It belongs to art dealer George Crossfield. Crossfield knows who the murderer is, but is trampled by a horse before he can reveal all.

Miss Marple has deduced who the killer is and decides to trap the killer by feigning a heart attack. She is confined to her room, and in the middle of the night she is attacked, but Miss Marple is ready. The murderer turns out to be Miss Milchrest, Cora’s companion. Her motive had been to acquire a painting of Cora’s.
