Tara Cavendish is found beaten to death by a cricket bat. Tara is the wife of Robert Cavendish, wealthy businessman and cricket team captain for the village of Fletcher’s Cross. The bat belongs to Cavendish’s son, Stephen. Stephen appears to have an alibi in that he was having an affair with the local barmaid at the time of the murder.

At the next cricket match a young lad, Charles Jennings, is found stabbed to death in the score hut. The knife used is an SS knife that was given to Robert Cavendish on his recent birthday. Jennings had apparently typed a blackmail note saying that he knew who killed Tara. Suspicion turns back to Stephen Cavendish, particularly when the barmaid said that Stephen had made her back his alibi.

Barnaby takes a long view and discovers that Robert Cavendish’s housekeeper, Emily Beavis, had died in a fall at the quarry some 18 months earlier. All three murders are linked. Barnaby works out that the incriminating items must have been taken by someone with access, in fact the new housekeeper. Perhaps Emily had died to make her post vacant and that the new housekeeper has a vendetta against Robert Cavendish. He and Troy rush to Cavendish’s house just in time to stop him being killed. The barmaid is the daughter of the housekeeper and killed Charles Jennings. The housekeeper killed Tara. The motive for the killing was the death of a man in Cavendish’s quarry. The man was the housekeeper’s husband.
