Tankersley Tavern is one of the historic buildings in the Village of Charlotte Court House, Virginia. George Washington Visited here in 1791 and it was the site of the famous state’s rights debate between Patrick Henry and John Randolph in March of 1799. Both men spoke for 3-hours and it was Randolph first speech, and it turned out to be Henry’s last speech, as he would die just three months later at his home, Red Hill, located just a few miles west of Charlotte Court House. This historic marker stands near Tankersley’s Tavern which is preserved as a bookstore.

The text of the marker reads:

HENRY AND RANDOLPH'S DEBATE
"Here, in March, 1799, took place the noted debate between Patrick Henry and John Randolph of Roanoke on the question of States' Rights. Henry denied the right of a state to oppose oppressive Federal laws. Randolph affirmed that right. This was Henry's last speech and Randolph's first. Henry died three months later."
