A university lecturer, Richard Symes, falls off the university library roof. Despite an open verdict at the inquest, Brian thinks suicide is unlikely, based on the fact that Symes had taken a large number of books out of a London library just before his death.

It would appear that Symes had been sacked by the vice-chancellor of the university, Ventham, on the basis that Symes had been stealing rare books from the university library in order to sell to his wife Paula, who runs a rare book shop. When Jack investigates he finds that there may be some truth in the allegation. A list of books that Symes was interested in turns up and Brian investigates whilst Jack follows Paula. Paula admits that she had been selling her husband’s books.

Brian goes undercover at the library and is befriended by the Urquarts, a couple who were colleagues of Symes. They seem to take a great interest in Brian’s searches, and Brian deduces that the Urquharts are looking for a very valuable rare book that Symes had stolen. The book is a first edition and Symes had hidden it somewhere in the library. Brian tries his deductive powers to find the book.

Security at the library was tight, which leaves the problem of how Symes got the books out. It appears that he was throwing them off the roof to an accomplice. The accomplice turns out to be Pavel Illich an ex student with visa problems. When pressed Illich tells of how he saw Symes and Ventham have an argument on the library roof the night Symes died. It was Ventham who killed Symes.
