This windmill is a common design used for years in rural areas and still in use today across the country. Its primary use was in remote locations to pump water to fill stock tanks for livestock. It could be outfitted with a tank float that stopped the pumping action when the tank was full.
The windmill is part of the museum exhibits at the Goffs Schoolhouse Museum and can be viewed from outside the grounds at any time. Direct access to the windmill is only available on selected weekends when the museum is open or by appointment (760-733-4482 or www.mdhca.org.). The pump actuating rod is missing and the windvane is positioned to "feather" the mill, just as if the windmill had been placed in the "off" position.
Coordinates were taken at the Historical Marker just outside the exhibit fence.
