Água Izé is currently a common village, but it wasn't always like this. Back in the colonial times it was a huge cocoa plantation, which collapsed as most of its kind after the independence of the country in 1975.
This church was part of the structures included in the plantation. It was built side by side with a school and there is a year carved somewhere there: 1938.
I couldn't fin any data about this church, not even if it still active, but considering the religiosity of the Santomeans and the good shape of the building I am tempted to conclude so.
