This episode starts with Charlie Findlayson training field glasses on a house, being discovered and chased into woods. In the woods he tries to flee by car but, finding his exit blocked by fallen trees, has a heart attack and dies. Some time later some offroad 4x4 drivers find his body and Barnaby investigates.

Charlie Findlayson used to live in Midsomer Sonning, but ran off to London with Christina, the wife of Guy Sandys, the owner of the local magazine, Midsomer Life. It was Sandys’s house that Findlayson had been observing. Barnaby deduces this, as the house is the only one around where the body was found.

Guy Sandys has annoyed several people locally with his articles. In particular, the local hotel owner Matt Morecroft has been criticised for bringing yuppie 4x4 drivers to the villages. Sandys is found murdered by a filing spike in his office, a little time after receiving a brown paper parcel from a man called Tomlin, who is staying at the Morecroft Hotel. Tomlin has disappeared and his car has been found at Waterloo station, indicating that he may have fled abroad.

On investigation Barnaby finds that Tomlin had been in jail for murder and had pleaded his innocence. Tomlin had been visited shortly before he was released on parole. It seems that the key witness in the trial had recanted her testimony on her death bed, but that he was not acquitted because of press pressure.

Meanwhile Eleanor Crouch, receptionist at the Morecroft Hotel, declares she has key evidence that she can give to the police. Before she can do this she is found dead in the hotel tumble dryer. At the hotel Barnaby noticed some dead plants below Tomlin’s bedroom window. He finally deduces that Tomlin sent Sandys a parcel of press cuttings that had influenced his trials. The cuttings were written by Julia Benson, Sandys’s reporter and part time lover. Julia had killed Tomlin and Sandys to preserve her career. Eleanor Crouch had seen Julia putting Tomlin’s suitcases, that Julia had thrown out of the window, into her car. Tomlin’s body is later found at a charcoal burner in the woods.
