The episode starts with the apparent suicide of Simon Bright in a vintage car parked in a Nissan hut at a disused airfield. The car has music, flowers and champagne for two which makes Barnaby suspicious. His suspicious are further heightened when the pathologist points out that Simon suffered a blow to the head prior to being put in the fume filled car.

A missing link in the case is the disappearance of Laura Sharp, Simon’s girlfriend. Laura appears to have led a charmed life in the local village. Her landlady is owed rent, but still has a signed photo of Laura by her bedside. The local publican, where Laura works as a barmaid, knows Laura helps herself from the till, but still keeps her on. She also works for a local kennels and has done some modelling for a local retired photographer. All in all she is connected with nearly everyone in the village.

The murder is resolved when Laura’s landlady is lured to the airfield after receiving phone calls purporting to be from Laura. At the airfield someone tries to throttle her, but is thwarted by Simon’s father who has been keeping watch on the airfield. The attempted murderer used a dog chain, which leads Barnaby to arrest the owner of the local kennels. Apparently both Stephen and Laura were attacked and put in the fume filled car. However Laura managed to escape and was killed separately and buried at the kennels.
