In 2011, this Coca-Cola sign was painted on a building based on a 1922 photo of the same sign. It is located across the street from the Bessemer Hall of History.

Located at the intersection of Alabama Avenue and 19th Street North, this sign stands out. The restorers used the same bright colors that were on the original sign 90 years ago. I asked at the museum why the Coca-Cola logo did not seem closer to the original. The person on duty told me that at some point in the building's history a door had been added, so they decided to shrink the logo to make it fit. A 2011 Birmingham News story about the restoration, including a video, can be found at The Birmingham News web site listed below.

While an advertisement might not be considered in the same vein as a mural about some non-commercial topic, this one has meaning for the community as it brought back a wall painting that had been gone for years. As the article notes, it was created based on a rare photo, and reflects the commercial side of the city in the early 1900s. The Bessemer Historical Homeowners Association provided the funds, while the painting was done by two brothers during their vacation.
