The Government of Canada built a telegraph line from Fort William to Fort Edmonton between 1874 to 1878. It was named the Dominion Telegraph line and it followed the proposed Pacific line railway. Humboldt was an important midpoint west of Winnipeg. It was a rapid way to communicate with Mounted Police, surveyors, territorial government in Battleford, and Canadian Militia in 1885 therefore it was a significant early development in the North West Territories.
