When the on-ramp from State Hwy (SH) 78 to the SH 190 in Garland was being built, someone from the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) decided that a "wrong way" sign should be placed on a nearby one-way connector street that is lower than the on-ramp. It is pretty easy to make a wrong turn at the connector's intersection with SH 78 as you try to get to Firewheel Town Center, a popular shopping area in Garland. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Because the connector is slightly beneath the line-of-sight for the on-ramp, there are places where you can't see that connector road from the on-ramp. But you CAN see the "wrong way" sign -- CLEARLY!
You feel a moment of terror as you realize you are trapped by traffic on the on ramp and are about to get spat out onto a freeway heading in the wrong direction!! (Except you aren't. It'll be fine.)
Doh!
The solution seems simple . . . but government is involved.
The NTTA solution to the connector's "wrong way" sign visible from the on-ramp was not to move the sign or paint "wrong way" in reflective paint on the connector at that spot. Nooooooo. Their solution was to add LOTS of yellow arrow "Go this way" signs all around the on ramp around the "wrong way" sign.
Apparently there is a magic number of signs telling you to do one thing that will cancel out a sign warning you NOT to do that thing.
Genius.
