Early Roads Met Here
Two important but primitive pioneer roads converged this point in Beckley in the 1800’s. The old State Road, completed in 1811, ran from the mouth of the Bluestone River in present Summers County to Kanawha Falls on the Kanawha River with the initial purpose of giving farmers a shortcut to the salt wells of Malden, Kanawha County. In 1837 it was chartered as the Giles, Fayette and Kanawha Turnpike, and the upgrading was completed about 1848. The Logan Road, also known as the Guyandotte Road, linking the Big Sandy River on the Kentucky border with Beckley, roughly followed Farley’s Trace, a bridle path hacked through the wilderness in 1797 for the convenience of fur trappers. That road became the Logan, Monroe and Raleigh Turnpike in 1849. - Raleigh County Historical Society
