This trail one of the most important of the fur trade period, connected the watershed of the Churchill River(Green Lake) to the Saskatchewan River. This was two main river systems that trade goods and furs were brought to and from Hudson Bay.

Starting about 1800 fur traders used the trail to bring pemmican from the plains to Green Lake for the boatmen. This was a less arduous route by the 1870's for transporting goods to and from Fort Carlton. Goods were hauled by dog sled in winter and river carts in summer over this 170 km route.

The missionaries and explorers including Franklin Polar Expedition used this trail. By 1900's surveyors and pioneers used it.
