Located in Pownal, Maine, Bradbury State Park was acquired by the Federal government in 1939, one of the first 5 state parks. Before becoming a park, the land was used by the Wabanakis, who camped on the land while traveling between the mountains and the coast. Later, the land was transformed into a farm by the Cotten family, in the 1800's, who raised cattle, sheep and pigs (the cattle containment fences can still be seen on Rt9). In the 1920s, fledspar was mined here, and used to make china and crockery (evidence can still be seen near the ballfields).
After the Federal Government acquired the land in 1939, it offered downhill skiing (and had a tow rope for use). An additional 250 acres were added in the 1990s, and the extensive multi-use trail system was improved. Today the park is used by horse back riders, hikers, mountain bikers, skiers and snowmobilers.
In addition to the trails, there are picnic areas, playground equipment, pit toilets, covered shelters and campsites.
