Macon County Courthouse Tower - Tuskegee, AL - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

While planning a visit to the waymarks in Tuskegee, I decided to check out the local benchmarks. This clock tower was one of the ones listed. The only information on the geocaching benchmark page was the initial 1943 observation. As a frame of reference, by 1943, the U. S. Army had established flight schools for African Americans in the area. Those pilots and crews are now known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1943 (GWL) THIS INTERSECTION STATION IS LOCATED IN THE CITY OF TUSKEGEE, AT THE N SIDE OF THE SQUARE, 82 FEET N OF AN E-W STREET AND 111 FEET E OF THE CENTER OF STATE HIGHWAY 81. IT IS OF TAN BRICK CONSTRUCTION, HAVING A CLOCK ON FOUR SIDES. IT IS ABOUT 120 FEET HIGH. THE POINT OBSERVED UPON WAS THE APEX OF THE TOWER.
