The Equinox House started out as the Marsh Tavern in 1769. Ira Allen of the Green Mountain Boys proposed confisicating the property to raise money for their efforts in the American Revolution. William Marsh bet on the side of the British and for his alleginance the British expropiated the the property, forcing Marsh to flee for Canada.
In 1780 the property was purchased by Thaddeus Munson. He built a new inn next door. The 200 room Equinox House was established in 1853 and it is still operated as an inn.
The hotel faces the the Village Green of Manchester and is in front of Mount Equinox. The hotel has been visited by 4 presidents, William Taft, US Grant, Teddy Roosevelt and Benjamin Harrison. President Abe Lincoln's wife visited the Equinox in 1864. She enjoyed her stay so much she made reservations for the following year. The hotel began construction of a special suite for the Lincoln's, however Lincoln was assassinated priort to their return.
The hotel was shuttered from neglect in 1972. In 1985 it reopened as a resort hotel and conference center. In 1991-92 a major reconstruction and restoration was completed to both the hotel and golf course.
