The present Hancock County Courthouse is the third for the county and is on the site of the previous courthouse. The three story courthouse is in a Beau Arts style and is constructed of Bedford limestone from Indiana. The courthouse was completed in 1908 and was very modern for its day with 700 electric lights and several toilets, at a time when most houses in the area did not have electricity or indoor plumbing. The courthouse was constructed for $117,828.30, viewed by many to be an extreme amount of the county at the time. The courthouse dome had four flat round panels intended for clocks which were not installed for 79 years then finally installed in 1987 through an effort of the local Kiwanis Club to raise the funds. The courthouse is in very good condition and continues to serve as the county courthouse.
