The large new cruise port of St. Petersburg is built on a large landfill, to the consternation of residents who once had sea view properties. It is located at the in easternmost part of the Baltic Sea on the Gulf of Finland near the mouth of the Neva River.
For ships cruising the Baltic Sea this is the major destination. Unfortunately it is bout five miles from the center of the city, so some form of transportation is essential. The port can handle a number of large cruise ships at the same time. When we were there we were joined by the MSC Opera.
Once you disembark you must pass through Russian passport control. A visa is required to enter the country, UNLESS you have purchased a ticket from an approved tour operator. They you show your ticket as along with your passport to be admitted. Once inside Russia most tours give you free time to travel on your own. However, be sure to return to the ship with your tour.
For those who did not do enough shopping while in St. Petersburg, there are a wide array of shops in the port terminal selling all manner of Russian made goods.
