Carole Wheeldon was a longtime Ashland resident who contributed much to the City of Ashland through her volunteer work and efforts to improve pedestrian and bicycling access. This location where her memorial plaque, tree and nearby redwood bench reside was an improvement project by Carole to create a safe haven for pedestrians and bicyclists to take a break from the busy car traffic coming and going from the streets nearby.

The plaque under the memorial tree says the following:

In Memory of

Carole Wheeldon
Ashland City Council 1995-2000

"She Walked People to
Places Never Imagined"

There is an online obituary that talks about Carole's life and can be read here: Carole Wheeldon Obit

In the event the web link expires, Carole's obituary says the following:

Carole Wheeldon died on September 15, 2006, at home with her family at her side, from complications related to breast cancer.

She was born Carole Lynn Ebert on November 25, 1952, to William and Marie Ebert in Chicago, Ill. Her family later moved to Omaha, Nebr. There she attended Marion High School and later received a Bachelor's in Fine Arts at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.

Carole moved to Ashland in 1978 to work in the costume shop at Oregon Shakespeare (OSFA). In 1980, she became costume shop manager, a position she held for 20 years. After leaving this position she pursued graduate studies at Southern Oregon State, receiving a Master's degree in Social Sciences. Recently, she had returned to OSFA and worked to establish the FAIR internship there.

Carole loved Ashland and contributed to countless volunteer groups. From 1995 to 2000, she served on the Ashland City Council. She was most interested in improving the environment for walking, biking and other alternative modes of travel. Her influence in promoting alternative modes is seen throughout the city.

Carole was an individual of unusual curiosity and courage. She had tremendous energy, and never did anything halfheartedly, even while fulfilling multiple roles simultaneously. Of all these roles, the one that she felt to be most important was that of a mother. And of all her accomplishments, she remained most proud of her two sons, Simon Wheeldon and Fletcher Beaudoin. She is also survived by her husband, David Beaudoin; and brothers, William and Robert Ebert; as well as a sister, Alice Renken.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to: City of Ashland, Bicycle/Pedestrian Commission, 20 East Main Street, c/o Carole Wheeldon Pedestrian Memorial Fund, Ashland, Oregon 97520. Details of Carole's memorial service are pending.
