General McIntosh's grave is in the Fort Smith National Cemetery in Fort Smith. In addition, in the same cemetery, there is a memorial marker honoring Gen. McIntosh, Gen. Steen and the unknown Confederate dead in Fort Smith National Cemetery.
General McIntosh was not noted for being a good student, having finished last in his West Point Class of 1849, offsetting this was the fact that he was courageous and daring. McIntosh was impulsive and reckless to the point of preferring to lead his men from the front instead of concentrating on the duties of a brigade commander, something that resulted in his being killed in action at the Battle of Pea Ridge. At the Battle of Pea Ridge, he commanded a brigade, and when Gen. McCulloch, who commanded his division was killed, McIntosh assumed command of the division. Less than fifteen minutes later McIntosh, commanding and leading the division from the front just he had lead his brigade, was struck and killed by a bullet as he was leading an advance.
