"The large Stag Elk-sculpture is almost the most renowned piece made by the sculptor J.R. Mäntynen. It's plaster version was present in the Nordic Hunting Exhibition organized by Finland's General Hunting Association (Suomen Yleinen Metsästäjäliitto) in Helsinki in 1924.
Nowdays the Stag Elk sculpture, which is of almost natural elksize and which is made under inspiration by finnish Kalevala-epic, has been cast in bronze for 4 times. First one of those was acquired to Viipuri, to the Torkkeli Park in 1928. The second cast from 1955 is located in Lahti, in the Erkko Park, the third is in Turku and the fourth cast was erected in front of the Natural Museum in Helsinki in 1972.
The Stag Elk-sculpture was the donation of Professor Jussi Mäntynen to the people of Turku on 26th of November in 1968. The bronze required to cast the sculpture from the plaster model in the Natural Museum of Helsinki University was funded by the city of Turku. The statue was unveiled in the Kupittaa Park on the 2nd of November in 1969. " Information from (
