The anchor is a huge symbol of our maritime past.
For over 4,000 years the anchor has been every mariner's vital item of
safety equipment. This huge anchor is sited along the High Street in
Blue Town, Kent. With it's historic dockyard alongside, a number of
anchors may be seen around the area. This particular anchor, a wooden
stocked anchor, was one chosen to be included in the History of the
World Project which ran in 2010 on the BBC because of the unique part
in the history of the anchor that Sheerness Dockyard played. The
dockyard was the only place in the world where anchor trials took
place. In 1852 anchors from around the world were brought to Sheerness
dockyard to be tested to find the best design.
