Second Beach is a special Pacific Northwest beach. Hike out to the beach 0.7 miles through the rain forest to this isolated beach. It does not connect to First Beach at the Quilleute Indian settlement of La Push or the extended hiking trail at Third Beach. The headlands keep Second Beach isolated as a half day beach walk. This is a low energy beach, with plenty of flat sand at low tide. It is not a swimming beach. None of the Pacific North-West beaches are swimming beaches. This is a beach to explore, first the walk through the rain forest observing the shapes of the trees, from their nurse tree roots to the storm twisted branches. The trees tell stories of their struggle to survive, grow and dominate the landscape. When you descent to the flat expanse of sand forming the beach, look out at the Crying Islands and farther out to the Quillayute Needles, a group of upstanding sea stacks. Walk north to see the natural arch at Quateata Head. Dabble in the tide pools to see the sea stars munching the gooseneck barnacles and mussels. Walk south on the broad expanse of sand at low tide observing the different life forms at different levels on the exposed rocks. You are finally cut off at Teahwhit Head but the marine life on the rocks is abundant here. Look for the natural arch at Teahwhit Head and the hole through the nearby sea stack. Enjoy the moods of the Pacific Northwest coast. We were there on an foggy day with low clouds. A couple of miles inland the skies were clear and the sun shining. We had a fine day exploring Second Beach.
