Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) stammte aus dem Südtiroler Passeiertal. Er wirkte als Kommandant der Tiroler und österreichischen Truppen im Befreiungskampf Tirols gegen die Bayern- und Franzosenherrschaft. Zeitweilig agierte er auch von der Innsbrucker
Hofburg aus als Regent des Landes Tirol. Nach mehreren siegreichen Waffengängen verlor er die vierte Berg-Isel-Schlacht und musste fliehen. Der tiefgläubige und bis in den Tod kaisertreue Hofer wurde durch Verrat an die Franzosen ausgeliefert und auf Befehl Napoleons in Mantua füsiliert. 1823 wurde der Leichnam des Tiroler Volkshelden in der Innsbrucker Hofkirche beigesetzt (Grabdenkmal von Johann Schaller).

Das Bronzedenkmal am Berg Isel zeigt Andreas Hofer mit breitkrempigem Hut und Fahne auf einem zehn Tonnen schweren Porphyrsockel, zwei große Adler zu seinen Füßen.

Das Monument wurde von dem in Wien lebenden, aus dem Vinschgau stammenden Bildhauer Heinrich Natter geschaffen, welcher allerdings knapp vor der Vollendung des Werkes starb. Die Statue wurde am 28. September 1893 in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Franz Joseph I. enthüllt. Nach der Enthüllungsfeier sammelten sich mehr als 10.000 Schützen zu einem festlichen Umzug durch die Stadt Innsbruck.

Am 1. Oktober 1961 wurde ein Sprengstoffanschlag auf das Denkmal verübt, der die Figur vom Sockel stürzte. Die Renovierungsarbeiten wurden noch im selben Jahr abgeschlossen.

Anlässlich der Hundertjahrfeier seiner Errichtung bezeichnete Landeshauptmann Alois Partl das Monument als ein „Symbol der Gemeinschaft, der Kraft des Optimismus, der Zukunftshoffnung und der aktiven Gestaltung in unserem ganzen Land".

Hofburg, regent of the Tyrol. After several victorious weapons programs, he lost the fourth Bergisel battle and was forced to flee.
