This church was originally completed in 1874 as a Presbyterian church. It is
number 479076 in the list of English Heritage Listed Buildings.
It describes the entrance and spire in the following manner.
“the 3-stage tower, with angle-buttresses, corner
pinnacles and a tall broached spire, has a 2-centred arched
west doorway in a shallow steeply-gabled porch set between the
buttresses, with elaborate enrichment including 3 orders of
moulding with colonnettes, a multi-foil in the gable and
crocketed coping with a finial; a triple niche of sharply
pointed crocketed trefoils in the centre of the second stage;
pairs of 2-light louvred belfry windows with hoodmoulds; an
arcaded frieze and oversailing pierced parapet; and lucarnes
at 2 levels of the spire.”
According to a Southport Civic Society plaque there were originally 3 churches on Lord Street with spires, but now only this one retains its spire.
