The passage, that starts beneath the statue, is called Gees
Court and leads to St Christopher Place. The statue is of a woman standing
tip-toed on a silver ball that has "Saint Christopher's Place" written across
the ball. The ball is about four feet in diameter. The woman has both arms
extended above her head and another, smaller ball, is resting on her finger
tips. Two stays extend from the small of the woman's back and are attached to
the sides of the passage to support the statue. The stays pass through three
smaller, silver balls.
The woman also appears to be silver but closer inspection
shows that the sculpture is made from hundreds of small, mirrored mosaic
pieces.
The Culture 24 website (visit
link) tells more about the sculpture:
"A two-metre sculpture covered in more than 1,000 pieces
of mirror mosaic which looms above the bustling hub of St Christopher’s Place
has become the 12th sculpture in a major series across central
London.
The Spirit of St Christopher took three years of
planning to create, designed by Paul Dart, of designers James Glancy, in a
£150,000 commission of a female figure looking over Oxford
Street.
The installation is a precursor to an expected £1 million
public investment at St Christopher's starting in January 2012. Partly funded by
Westminster Council, the works are expected to be completed by the time of the
Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer."
