The monument is located behind the depot at the Illinois Railway Museum.

The text of the marker reads:
Dedicated to the enduring memory and honor of more than ten thousand fellow workers of the Illinois Central system who served in the armed forces of their country during World War II.
These made the supreme sacrifice in defense of peace freedom and justice. [220 names are listed]

An additional sign nearby explains that railroad workers we exempt from the draft since they deemed essential personnel. Thousands volunteered anyway. The monument was originally dedicated in 1946 and displayed at the Central Station in Chicago. After the station closed in 1972, the monument was in storage until 1997.
